British teenager dies in motorcycle crash in Vietnam, family pays tribute
The family of Orla Wates, a 19-year-old British teenager, has paid tribute following her death from a motorcycle crash on the Ha Giang loop in northern Vietnam. Wates was taken to Viet Duc University hospital in Hanoi, where she later died. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that its consular staff were supporting her family during this time.
Her parents, Andrew and Henrietta Wates, described their daughter as "beautiful, independent and very funny, with a sharp wit." They expressed gratitude to the hospital staff for their care and shared that Orla's organs were donated to save others. Her mother stated, "At this extremely difficult time for our family, we chose to donate Orla’s organs, as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted."
In a heartfelt message, her father noted, "Vietnam was a country she loved and so to give back to Vietnam as well I think is very important for us." The Ha Giang loop, a popular route among tourists, is known for its scenic views and is often navigated by inexperienced motorcyclists, sometimes riding pillion with tour operators. An FCDO spokesperson remarked, "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam. We are in touch with the local authorities, and our consular staff are doing all they can to support Orla’s family at this hugely difficult time."
