Eric Swalwell faces staff resignations amid sexual assault allegations
California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell's campaign suffered significant setbacks this week as several staffers resigned and key political endorsements were withdrawn due to allegations of sexual misconduct. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a woman, who was a former employee of Swalwell, accused him of sexually assaulting her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent. Swalwell, who has represented the East Bay area in Congress since 2013, stated, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public – as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."
In addition to the initial allegations, three other women also accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct in interviews with CNN. Swalwell denied these claims and suggested that the timing of the allegations was intended to undermine his campaign. His campaign did not respond to inquiries from the Guardian. Prominent supporters, including California Senator Adam Schiff and Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, rescinded their endorsements, with Gallego expressing regret for previously defending Swalwell. Antonio Villaraigosa, a rival in the gubernatorial race, called for Swalwell to withdraw from both the governor's race and Congress, labeling his actions as a disgrace to democracy.
The fallout from these allegations has significantly weakened Swalwell's position as a frontrunner in the Democratic race to succeed Gavin Newsom. With key endorsements lost and staff departures, Swalwell's campaign faces a critical juncture as he attempts to navigate the allegations while maintaining his political viability. The strategic play for Swalwell now involves not only addressing these allegations but also regaining trust among voters and party leaders.
What to watch: The upcoming decisions from Swalwell regarding his campaign's future and potential legal actions will be pivotal in determining his political trajectory.
