Iran gains leverage amid Middle East crisis over nuclear negotiations
Diplomatic sources indicate that Iran believes the current situation is an unprecedented set of circumstances to negotiate on favorable terms. Former US envoys who dealt with Iran stated that the US-Israeli attack on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent closure of the strait of Hormuz have provided Iran with new tools and resolve to resist pressure to shutter its nuclear program. Alan Eyre, a former diplomat involved in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), remarked, "This administration, to say it more politely, cannot unsoil the bed. There’s no way to get back to the status quo ante before this war started."
The Trump administration’s strategy of high pressure, including sanctions and military strikes, has complicated negotiations. Eyre noted that the strait of Hormuz serves as a strategic deterrent, making Iran's nuclear program less crucial. He stated, "They’ve got a really cool threat now, which is incredibly easy to turn on and off." The Iranian delegation is reportedly optimistic about negotiating from a position of strength, as the US appears eager to exit the conflict quickly.
A US delegation led by JD Vance is set to meet Iranian negotiators in Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend. However, the US has not provided a clear plan for reopening the strait of Hormuz, either through military force or negotiations. Robert Malley, a former special envoy to Iran, highlighted that the US has inadvertently given Iran a tool it had not previously considered using. The chances for a comprehensive agreement addressing all grievances seem slim, as the Trump administration’s broader objectives may be at odds with the realities on the ground.
What to watch: The upcoming meeting in Islamabad between the US and Iranian negotiators will be critical in determining the future of nuclear negotiations and regional stability.
