Mali's defense minister killed amid coordinated insurgent attacks
Mali’s defense minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in a car bomb attack at his residence in Kati, as confirmed by government spokesperson Issa Ousmane Coulibaly. The attack occurred during a series of coordinated assaults by insurgents, including the West African al-Qaida affiliate, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). Camara sustained injuries from the explosion and later died in a hospital. In response to the attacks, the government announced a two-day mourning period.
The insurgent operation is described by analysts as one of the largest coordinated attacks in Mali in recent years, with strikes reported near Bamako airport and in other locations including Mopti, Sevare, and Gao. The fate of the strategic city of Kidal, a former stronghold of the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front, remains uncertain. The FLA claimed that Kidal had fallen and indicated a deal allowing Russian mercenaries to leave a besieged camp.
Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel programme at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, stated that the attack represents a significant setback for Russia, which has supported Mali’s military-led government following the expulsion of Western forces. Laessing noted, "For Russia the attack has been a disaster. They were unable to prevent the fall of the highly symbolic Tuareg stronghold of Kidal." Meanwhile, the Russian state-run broadcaster Vesti reported that Russian personnel were engaged in repelling the militant attacks alongside Mali’s armed forces.
This series of attacks underscores the failure of Mali’s government to provide the security it promised. The recent violence follows a history of attacks, including a September 2024 assault on a paramilitary police training school, which resulted in approximately 70 fatalities. The government has been seeking closer ties with Washington to enhance security cooperation and explore mining opportunities, while also alleging that neighboring states and foreign powers support terrorist groups without naming them.
What to watch: The response of Mali’s government and military to the ongoing insurgent threat, particularly in Kidal, will be critical in shaping the region's security landscape.
