Mamdani's first 100 days: childcare reforms and pothole fixes
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has completed his first 100 days in office, marked by significant achievements including the rollout of universal childcare and the filling of 100,000 potholes. Mamdani stated, "These are the things that New Yorkers need, because we’re talking about a city of immense wealth, the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, where one in four New Yorkers are also living in poverty."
His administration secured $1.2 billion from state revenue streams to fund the childcare initiative, which will add 2,000 daycare seats in lower-income neighborhoods. "The only real majority in this country and in this city is that of the working class," Mamdani emphasized, reflecting his focus on affordability amid rising living costs.
Despite these victories, Mamdani faces challenges, including criticism from within his party and scrutiny over the city’s response to recent snowstorms. He acknowledged the need for better planning, stating, "Every crisis is an opportunity to learn about the tools that the city has."
Mamdani's political capital is at stake as he navigates tensions with Governor Kathy Hochul over tax policies necessary for funding his broader agenda. Political strategist Adin Lenchner noted, "If he can continue to build that grassroots support, there will be more and more public pressure to actually execute on those priorities." However, the mayor's success will depend on his ability to exert pressure on state lawmakers, as many of his proposals hinge on tax increases that require state approval.
What to watch: Mamdani's upcoming negotiations with the state assembly regarding tax policies will be crucial for his administration's future initiatives.
