Sudan's Prime Minister outlines peace initiative amid ongoing conflict
Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris has outlined a comprehensive initiative aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the country. During a recent address, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive ceasefire and the assembly of rebel militias in designated locations. Idris stated, "Our minds and hearts remain open to anyone who extends a peaceful hand and seeks the advancement of the nation."
The Hope Government initiative also calls for the voluntary return of displaced people and a model of transitional justice that balances forgiveness and accountability. Idris noted, "We promise our people that we will live up to their expectations, review our mistakes without hesitation, and firmly support those who seek to build and reconstruct according to the principles of good governance."
Idris highlighted the role of regional interference in prolonging the war, stating that the conflict was fueled by the Rapid Support Forces militia and supported by external actors. He criticized international meetings that exclude the Sudanese government, asserting, "Nothing emerging from that meeting will find a place except in the archives."
Despite the ongoing war, Idris reported signs of economic recovery, with inflation decreasing and gold production increasing. He stated, "We have begun rebuilding Khartoum and restoring life to the capital," and emphasized a new model for Sudan’s reconstruction that focuses on equitable resource distribution and human development.
Power Read: The Sudanese government, under Idris, is attempting to regain control over the narrative and the peace process, positioning itself as a legitimate authority despite the ongoing conflict. By advocating for a national dialogue and emphasizing reconstruction, Idris seeks to consolidate power and attract international support while exposing the failures of external actors who have sidelined Sudanese voices. This initiative could shift the balance of power back towards the government if successful, but it remains contingent on the cooperation of various factions and the international community.
What to watch: The upcoming response from international bodies to the Hope Government initiative and any potential shifts in regional alliances.
