Texas man charged after arson attack on OpenAI CEO Altman's home
Authorities have charged 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama with attempted murder and arson following an attack on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's home in San Francisco. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the charges, stating, "We interpret this behaviour for just what it is: An attempt on Mr Altman’s life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company." Moreno-Gama faces two counts of attempted murder and nine additional charges, with the possibility of life imprisonment.
The incident occurred when Moreno-Gama allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman's residence shortly after 3:30 AM local time. Following the attack, he proceeded to OpenAI's headquarters, where he attempted to break in and expressed intentions to "burn it down and kill anyone inside." Law enforcement recovered incendiary devices and a document indicating Moreno-Gama's opposition to Altman and artificial intelligence.
In response to the attack, Altman acknowledged the intense scrutiny surrounding AI and called for a de-escalation of public debate, stating, "While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally." Jenkins also condemned the "incendiary rhetoric" surrounding AI discussions, emphasizing that no one should face life-threatening violence over differing opinions.
