US-Iran talks in Islamabad end without agreement amid high tensions
Islamabad, Pakistan – This week, ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran concluded without an agreement after 21 hours of negotiations. The Iranian delegation arrived late on Friday night, and the American officials landed at Nur Khan Air Base the following afternoon. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif described the talks as a "make-or-break moment for lasting peace."
The discussions were marked by a clash of fundamentally different worldviews: the US approach of "peace through strength" versus Iran's "resistance with dignity." Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had set conditions for talks, demanding movement on a ceasefire in Lebanon and the unfreezing of Iranian assets.
Despite the high stakes, the negotiations faced significant challenges. The American delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, emphasized the need for Iran to commit to not pursuing nuclear weapons. Vance stated, "The good news is that we’ve had substantive discussions. The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement."
Iranian officials characterized the talks as a process rather than an event, with Iran's ambassador in Islamabad suggesting that the discussions laid the foundation for future engagement. However, state-affiliated outlets in Iran framed the US demands as excessive, indicating a hardened stance from Tehran.
Pakistan's role as a mediator was underscored by its unique geopolitical position, maintaining ties with both the US and Iran while lacking US military bases. This positioning allowed Islamabad to facilitate dialogue amid deepened mistrust between the two nations.
What to watch: The next steps from both the US and Iran regarding their respective positions on nuclear commitments and regional conflicts.
