US charges Sinaloa governor, exposing political cartel links
United States prosecutors have charged Sinaloa state Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine current and former officials with links to the Sinaloa drug cartel. The indictment, unsealed in New York, alleges that Rocha Moya, 76, and others collaborated with cartel leaders to smuggle narcotics into the US in exchange for political support and bribes.
The indictment claims that cartel operatives aided Rocha Moya's 2021 election campaign by kidnapping and threatening opposition candidates, as well as stealing ballots. Enrique Diaz Vega, a defendant who later became Rocha Moya’s secretary of administration and finance, allegedly provided the cartel with information about opponents to pressure them into withdrawing from the race. The US Justice Department noted that many of the suspects are aligned with the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the Sinaloa cartel cofounder currently serving a life sentence in the US.
Terrance Cole, administrator of the DEA, stated, "The Sinaloa Cartel is not just trafficking deadly drugs; it is a designated terrorist organization that relies on corruption and bribery to drive violence and profit." He added that the indictment reveals a systematic effort to undermine public institutions and endanger American lives. Rocha Moya has rejected the charges, claiming they are baseless and part of a political attack against him and the Morena movement.
The Mexican government responded, stating that the US documents requesting arrests and potential extraditions lacked sufficient evidence. Experts suggest that this case signifies a shift in US strategy to target sitting government officials involved in organized crime, a move described as a 'nuclear option.' Vanda Felbab-Brown from the Brookings Institution noted that Rocha is at the center of a broader investigation into the crime-politics nexus in Sinaloa.
The case poses a significant political challenge for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, given Rocha Moya's ties to her Morena party and former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Felbab-Brown remarked that Sheinbaum's response could have substantial diplomatic and domestic implications, particularly regarding US-Mexico relations amid ongoing trade negotiations.
What to watch: The upcoming decisions by President Sheinbaum regarding Rocha Moya's status could impact US-Mexico relations significantly.
